Special Exhibition: King Ludwig II – Images of a Fairy-Tale King
May 18, 2026
In collaboration with Dr. Bernhard Graf, the Munich Show is presenting an extraordinary and high-caliber special exhibition dedicated to the life of the legendary Bavarian King Ludwig II.
Passionate with everything he could find beauty within, the monarch spent fortunes on art in all its shapes and forms, resulting in a treasure-filled legacy. Slowly curating his own collection of precious bejewelled accessories, he also enjoyed gifting treasures to his friends and loved ones. Collector in the soul, King Ludwig II became fascinated in the young science of photography, as it was a means of capturing and preserving treasured memories. He therefore invested as much in this art as he did for his jewelry collection.
Across a total of 16 impressively staged chapters, a fascinating portrait of the “Fairy-Tale King” unfolds, vividly told through personal treasures from his collection and rare original photographs from his lifetime.
A spectacular highlight forms the centerpiece of the exhibition: Over a period of more than ten years, sculptor Thomas Doneis created an impressive 1:62-scale replica of Neuschwanstein Castle from a single 21-ton block of sandstone. It is a masterpiece of extraordinary attention to detail and artistic dedication.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of photography, get a unique insight into the passions and dreams of Ludwig II: see the world through his eyes, and experience his visions of beauty.
